Fixing the nitrogen crisis: The search for sustainable fertilisers
Matthew Campbell examines the nitrogen crisis in agriculture, its environmental impact, and explores microbial solutions for sustainability.
Matthew is a DPhil student in the Department of Biology working with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Matthew's research focuses on free-living bacteria capable of nitrogen fixation which form close root associations with the cereal crop barley. Matthew is looking to engineer these bacteria to optimise communication and nitrogen transfer from bacteria to the plant. The ultimate goal is to improve plant growth, with the broader aim of reducing the need for chemical nitrogen fertiliser application to crops.
