We are always looking for new writers and new stories to publish in The Oxford Scientist.
If you have an idea for an article, please pitch it to us. If you would like to see something covered in OxSci but don’t want to write it yourself, feel free to pitch things to us as open commissions to be passed on to other keen writers.
We accept pieces across all scientific disciplines, and are especially interested in topics out of the range of what we’ve published on in the past. Certain posts may also benefit from interviews.
We particularly encourage people of colour, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, members of ethnic minorities, and people from working-class backgrounds to contribute and pitch article ideas to us.
Sections to pitch to
Pieces fall under one of our four main sections, though these can overlap:
News
These are shorter articles covering a recent development in science, whether the publication of paper, an event or conference, or a scientist’s perspective on a recent event in the wider world. Usually 350-650 words.
Features
Longer, tightly researched and more in-depth explorations of an area of science, a particular theme, or the work of a particular scientist. Usually 1000-2000 words.
Opinion
A persuasive piece aiming to convince our readers of the writer’s view of an issue in science, whether research itself, scientific culture, policy or studying in STEM fields. Usually 800-1200 words.
Culture
Where science meets the everyday. Have you read a pop science book recently that you want to tell the world about? Or a film that uses really interesting new tech? Tell us your thoughts. Articles may vary from 600 to 2000 words.
Please consider which section your pitch would be best suited to when contacting us. If you are unsure, or would like to discuss any element of your pitch further with us, you can indicate this on the form. We will happily discuss with you.
** Please note we only accept pitches from current University of Oxford students. If you are a school student and wishing to write for us, do consider our Schools Competition.
** We do not take guest posts and unfortunately will not be able to respond to requests to do so.
